Dental Crowns
What is a crown you say? Your teeth are made up of many parts. The crown is the easiest to recognize. Simply put, it’s the part that we see when we look at someone’s smile. In natural teeth, the crown is made up of enamel, which is a hard mineralized substance that protects everything inside the tooth.
In fact, enamel is the hardest substance created by the human body. But it’s not unbreakable. Sometimes it needs to be replaced by a synthetic crown. The synthetic crown acts like a tooth helmet, covering the natural tooth in a sealed, protective layer.
These are usually made from dental-grade porcelain and are crafted to look just like your natural teeth. In fact, our current technology has made it nearly impossible to tell the difference between a crowned tooth and a natural one without a closer look.
Why Would I Need a Crown?
A crown may be needed to prescribed by your Dentist to:
- Restore and protect a tooth that is worn, decayed, cracked, or broken
- Protect and support a tooth after a very large filling or root canal treatment
- Cover a dental implant
- Hold a dental bridge or another prosthetic device in place
- Improve your smile by covering a misshapen or severely discolored tooth
